Manifesto for North, West & Hebrides Depute President (Islands)
Hello fellow students,
My name is Alasdair Macleod and I am pleased to be standing for the post of North, West & Hebrides Depute President (Islands) for the 2025/26 academic year.
As a mature student, a qualified Chartered Accountant, and a former employee of Lews Castle College & UHI NWH, I will bring a wealth of experience to our student body. I am passionate about making a positive impact on our academic community and ensuring that every student's voice is heard. I believe that I can bring a new, different perspective to HISA which will positively add to the voices of those who are starting out on their post-school careers.
Why am I standing?
Having spent nearly a decade working in the College, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the opportunities it can bring to anyone, no matter what stage they are in their career. Returning to the College as a student has been an eye-opener for me, and I am committed to using my knowledge from being a member of staff to improve the learning experience for everyone. My decision to stand for election is driven by a desire to use my skills and experience to benefit all students, regardless of their background or stage in life.
What do I want for you?
- Enhanced support for all students
- As someone who had to work from home through the Covid lockdown, I understand the challenges faced by those who had to convert rapidly from face-to-face into online learning or working. I will advocate for tailored support services, including flexible scheduling, dedicated counselling, and networking opportunities to help students navigate this new way of learning. I will also push for the resumption of on-campus teaching wherever possible. Whilst I appreciate that online teaching means that students in remote locations are able to study for courses that would otherwise be inaccessible to them, I also believe that nothing can replicate the value of sitting in a classroom with your course mates and a good lecturer in front of you.
- Financial transparency and accountability
- With my background in accounting, I am well-equipped to ensure that the College funds are managed responsibly. I will push for greater transparency in how the College income is spent, ensuring that every pound is used effectively to enhance our educational experience. I will also request a seat on the Finance & General Purposes Committee so that the student voice can be heard on key decisions before they are dictated to us as a new policy.
- Inclusive and Diverse Community
- Our student body is wonderfully diverse, and it is crucial that everyone feels included and valued. I will support initiatives that promote inclusivity, such as cultural events, diversity training, and support groups for underrepresented students.
- Enhanced Communication Channels
- Effective communication is key to ensuring that students are able to get the best learning experience from their time in UHI. I will set regular drop-in sessions where any student will have the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions with me. Having been an employee of the College, I know most of the staff and will have no hesitation in approaching them, in confidence if need be, with any issues you want to raise.
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- The pressures of academic life can take a toll on mental health. I will advocate for increased mental health resources, including counselling services, stress management workshops, and wellness programs to support the overall wellbeing of our students.
Finally
I am standing for election because I believe in the power of education to change lives. I feel that my student and career experience can help to create an environment where every student can succeed, regardless of their age or background. With your support, I am confident that we can make meaningful changes that will benefit our entire student community.
Thank you for considering my candidacy and please, vote me as your Depute President for 2025/26. I will do my best for you.
Best wishes,
Alasdair Macleod
