International Womens Day

In light of this years International Womens Day theme of #EachforEqual - HISA VPFE, Ash Morgan, has highlighted her thoughts on equality.

At HISA, we strive for equal representation of the student body at the University of the Highlands and Islands, and an education system that creates equal opportunities for all.

We value the incredible work of our female students, officers and staff members, but acknowledge the ongoing struggle of equal recognition, appreciation and rights for women.

International Women’s Day is a day for celebration but also for awareness and remembrance. We must celebrate how far we have come but also we must be aware of and remember those who have come before us and have paved the way for what is possible today.

Today I want to celebrate and remember the life of Marsha P. Johnson, the woman I am inspired by most. Marsha P. Johnson was a trans woman who was one of the original initiators of the Stonewall Uprising. Her life was filled with hardship but from the 60s to when she died in the 90s she never stopped campaigning for gay rights.

She was an inspirational character by all accounts, often living on the streets and dealing with brutal attacks and mental health issues, however she did not let this stop her fighting for what she felt was right. This included rights for trans women, some of the most marginalised women, even by today’s standards.

I find her drive and passion an inspiration and hope to bring this to my own work in the liberation sector.
