Alastair Mateer – Orkney Depute President Manifesto

About Me

Hello, my name is Alastair and I have recently started a Social Sciences course with UHI. I love being part of UHI Orkney, and love engaging with fellow students. The staff working with UHI Orkney are great role models for us students as they are kind, friendly, and extremely approachable. These three positive traits are ones that I possess.

I have recently been elected as a HISA student rep for my course, and any troubles, claims, or general questions will be answered in the most helpful way possible. I'm a leader, but I'm also a team player, and helping students with any enquiries would be my pleasure. I'm big on student voice, and anyone with questions will be heard out right.

I have won an election before, and I hope to win again, so casting your vote on me would certainly not be a waste. I have also had work experience with the Orkney Islands Council legal department, so I'm no stranger to communication and justice.

My Pledges

My pledges consist of free hot drink provisions during the winter months, student discounts relating to local businesses, an upgraded common room, and social nights. I will work with HISA and UHI to pursue these pledges, and I will provide regular updates on them.

Winter Hot Drinks

No one wants to study during the winter months without an invigorating hot drink, so I want to make hot drinks easily accessible for students during these freezing cold times. These hot drinks will be coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Soup will also be considered.

Local Student Discounts

I want student discounts to come into play to enhance the college experience. I will work hard to partner with local businesses to secure exclusive discounts for UHI students.

More Social Events

Social nights are critical for a real college experience, and providing students with these can really strengthen their bond with UHI Orkney. I will give students social mixers and quiz nights. I also plan on providing top hospitality with these social nights to make the experience more enjoyable.

Better Common Room

The student common room is essential for students to mingle, study, or to simply get comfortable and relax. I want to upgrade it by implementing better seating, charging stations, and kitchen essentials.

Closing Statement

Overall, these are changes that I believe would make a real difference to students at UHI, and I will work to make them a reality. Voting for me will take you one step closer to that reality, and will welcome a stronger student voice for the isles.

If I am elected you can expect practical changes, a welcoming campus, and a Depute President who listens to you.
