One of the best ways to make the most of your time as a UHI student is to get involved in HISA! We have lots of different opportunities from voluntary roles to paid internships and elected office, which all help you grow your skills and confidence, meet new people and improve the student experience at UHI.
So why not check out these possibilities? If you're already doing one of them, you could think about another - this year or next year!
We add new opportunities from time to time, so do keep coming back to this page and follow our socials for updates.
You could be among hundreds of Student Voice Reps (SVRs) who volunteer to help gather students' ideas, feedback and suggestions from across UHI's many programmes. It's a great way to develop your skills in communication and negotiation, and to channel your enthusiasm for improving learning and the wider student experience at UHI. There's plenty training available, and you can give as much or as little of your time to the job as you are able.
We have dozens of clubs and societies at UHI, and they're at the heart of student life. Setting one up or volunteering on its committee can strengthen your skills in teamworking, organising, fundraising, events and much, much more. Not to mention you're helping to enhance the student experience of everyone who gets involved!
HISA is led by our team of elected, paid Student Officers, who represent all students across UHI. Our main Student Elections will be in early 2027, but over September 2026 we are running a by-election for our North, West and Hebrides Depute President (West), so please think about standing if you're in that area.
If you're interested in how things work, how organisations are governed, and how strategic decisions are made at UHI, or if you have any experience of governance and trusteeship from your wider interests in life, you may be interested in joining the governing body (Board of Management) of your partner or college.
While most of our elected Student Officers serve on these, many of them also have a second place for a student member who serves on a voluntary basis. We are currently recruiting for student board members for 2026-27 at UHI Moray, UHI Inverness, UHI Perth and UHI Argyll.
We currently have various roles for research students at UHI, so if you're a postgraduate researcher (PGR) such as a PhD student, check out our dedicated PGR page.
