Home-Start supports families with children age 5 and under. This is primarily done by home visiting though we also run baby and toddler groups in Wick and Thurso. Our staff and volunteers support families by providing non-judgemental practical and emotional support and help build the family's confidence and ability to cope. For a student, this could mean supporting staff and other volunteers at baby and toddler groups, playing with toddlers, making cups of tea and chatting to parents. We also host fundraising events and activity days for our families. This could involve anything from selling raffle tickets to making tea to face-painting, glitter tattoos, or supervising games and activities for the children. Our volunteers also receive training such as First Aid and Child Protection, which may be useful for a students CV. My role as volunteer coordinator is primarily to support and train volunteers, offering peer support and help with anything that is needed. My contact is donnascott@homestartcaithness.org.uk
