The winning entries to our Art Competition are now hanging in the Goodlyburn Canteen!
We are excited to announce the winners of our Art Competition - Your Campus, Your Creativity, Your Walls!
The judging panel was really impressed with the quality, creativity shown in all the artworks submitted. After a lot of discussion, they have chosen five pieces which are all displayed in the Goodlyburn Canteen and will remain in place for the next year.
In no particular order, the winning pieces are:
“Collective Overdose” by Julie McDonald (Art and Contemporary Practice)
Created in partnership with One Health Breakthrough Partnership, to be used as a bridge for discussion between scientific data and the public, concerning the increasing pollution in our waterway which is adversely affecting plants and animals.
“Protect Against Hate” by Kallan-grimm McLachlan (Archaeology)
I'm Kallan-Grimm aka UnusualGrimm, I'm an Archaeology student who just finished 1st year. This piece is a way for me to show the frustrating and hopeful feelings concerning the current societal/political world. Filled with symbolism for various countries, people, and cultures to inspire you. To help speak out to protect those who need it and to be the safe space someone may need, even if sometimes it seems frightening.

“Life in the Decay” by Gordon Griffiths (aka Griff) (Contemporary Art Practice)Life in the Decay explores regeneration, resilience, and hidden beauty in overlooked places. Inspired by a macro photograph of decaying material taken in the UHI Perth Art Studio Yard, the work began with noticing a tiny patch of moss growing through deteriorated chipboard. Developed through observation and making, the stained glass and reclaimed oak piece reflects my interest in transformation, storytelling, and the idea that life can emerge from unexpected places if we slow down enough to look.

“Positive Futures” by Daniel White (PGDE Primary)
I have been a student for the last 9 years as I have progressed from HNC to Degree and now PGDE. Throughout all that, I have always had the ASW as a way to relax and clear my head. When it came to choosing my image, I subconsciously started to draw the Webster building before I realised its significance to my life. Every time I go to the gym, I'm not just going to work out, I'm going to make myself better, I'm thinking to the future, what I will become, and it is metaphorical for my brighter future. I hope it inspires others and serves as a reminder of how significant little bits of work at to the bigger picture.
“Untitled” by Sandy Shields (Contemporary Art Practice)
This abstract piece grew from a playful squeegee‑painting session in our art club, where experimentation took the lead and intention followed later. Built through instinct, colour, and chance, it captures the freedom of making without rules—letting the process shape the final image.
To all the wonderful students that pass UHI's halls, we are greatly appreciative of the talent that our students possess. With this new addition to the Goodlyburn cafeteria we hope to continue displaying the creativity and personality of all our students!
