Manifesto

Candidate for the position of Inverness Depute President

Chloe Young

Hello! I'm Chloe Young and I am running for the Inverness Depute President position in the Student Officer elections.

I’m running for this position to continue to improve the quality of the UHI Inverness experience for all students. I’m currently a student myself studying Archaeology part-time online, so I know how difficult it can be, especially with how unreliable Brightspace is at times. I’m also Transgender and Queer which gives me a unique experience of many of the issues facing a wide range of students at UHI Inverness, which I can use to benefit all students.

I’m also the current Inverness Student President. In the 7 months I’ve been in post I’ve been gathering feedback on Stagecoach services that students use, and I'm using this to fight for better and more reliable services for UHI Inverness students. I’ve helped organise events like our freshers and refreshers fayres and worked hard with the senior management team to secure the ongoing improvements in the new Student Social space next to the canteen/LRC.

If re-elected, I will campaign on the following points:

1. Improving Transport
Many of us rely on public transport to get into college, primarily Stagecoach within Inverness. With the new changes to their services over the last few months, several routes have been cut and timetables have been changed. The cut routes are a huge blow to accessibility across the region and will likely affect many of you getting onto campus. I will continue to push to put the pressure on Stagecoach to reconsider some of their links to UHI Inverness, from both inside and outside the city, including between the main campus and the Scottish School of Forestry campus.

2. A Social Student Experience
Due to the uniqueness of UHI Inverness being somewhere between a university and a college, it can be a challenge to have the typical university social experience when you or your classmates are online learners, or maybe just live far from campus. That’s why I aim to host even more events than last year, both on campus and online, for students to join in with – like seasonal stalls, online quizzes and in-person movie nights in the Social Space. I will also continue to work with the college to improve the aforementioned Social Space with new additions like board games and PCs.

3. Safety, Equality and Inclusion
Every student has the right to an inclusive, high-quality education, but I’m sure many of you have noticed the rise in negative behaviours across campus recently. The destructive behaviour and an increase in misogyny make the campus a less inclusive and safe place for every student. I will campaign to ensure the campus experience is safe, equal and inclusive for every student by raising awareness of the implications of unsafe behaviour and discrimination in education through student-led campaign groups on misogyny and gender based violence.

Make sure you get out there and vote for me – Chloe Young – for Inverness Depute in the upcoming Student Officer Elections! Polls are open between 10am on Monday the 9th of March and 4pm on Thursday the 12th of March.
