Irene Hynd

External Trustee

  • Why did you become a Trustee at the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association?

I am at a stage in my career where it was important to give something back, beyond the contribution I make through my role at another University. Before HISA, I had not found anything that stimulated my interest, or which provided an opportunity to share my Higher Education experience. HISA is a relatively young Association, so there was a genuine opportunity to contribute to its growing maturity. At a personal level, I am committed to improving the life chances of individuals, and this has been an important focus of my work over the years. As a proud Highlander, I was really excited by the prospect of contributing to student success at the University of the Highlands and Islands, which was just in the planning stages when I left my home in Inverness to study at the nearest University, the University of Aberdeen. I was really delighted to be appointed to the role.

  • Briefly tell us about your role?

I graduated with an MA Honours degree in Economics and Social History, but was fortunate, under the Scottish system, to be able to study Psychology, Econometrics, Statistics as well as Scottish and Medieval History. I was exposed to some brilliant minds along the way.

  • What is your fondest memory of being a student?

I am mindful that I benefitted from a university experience made possible by a student grant, in addition to free tuition.  I have fond memories of study in the wonderful old Kings Library, of friendships and flatmates drawn from across the world, of 80’s fashions (now back!), and gigs in the Students’ Union.

  • What inspires and/or motivates you?

I am motivated by a genuine belief in the transformative impact of education, and by a belief in equal access to education, irrespective of background.

  • What do you hope to bring to the Trustee Board?

I hope that I bring broad experience and expertise in higher education that’s of benefit to the board.  I hope I am a strong advocate for HISA, both internally and externally, and a thoughtful contributor to the board’s discussions, contributing where I think I can add value, and asking sensible questions when I need help to understand.
