On November 14th, I had the privilege of joining fellow student leaders, activists, and supporters at the NUS Scotland Housing Rally outside the Scottish Parliament. The rally was an incredible demonstration of student solidarity, as we came together to demand stronger protections and support in the upcoming Housing Bill.

As Vice President (Education) for the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association, I was honored to be invited to speak about the housing challenges our students face—especially those in rural and remote areas.

Standing in front of the Scottish Parliament, I shared stories of students who are forced to make impossible choices between paying for rent or eating, between living in substandard accommodation or commuting hours each day. These aren’t just statistics; these are real people trying to make their education work despite the odds stacked against them.

I highlighted how students in rural areas often face higher costs and fewer options, which exacerbates the financial and emotional strain of studying. For these students, the housing crisis isn't just about affordability—it's about accessibility, equity, and survival.

I made it clear that the new Housing Bill must address these inequalities. We need fair rent controls, improved housing standards, and targeted support for students living in areas with limited housing options. Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, and students are no exception.

The energy and determination at the rally were inspiring. Seeing so many people come together for a shared cause reaffirmed why I’m passionate about this role. Housing is a fundamental right, and as student representatives, it’s our duty to ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear.

I’m proud to have stood alongside so many dedicated advocates, and I’ll continue to fight for a Housing Bill that works for all students—no matter where they live.
