December 10th marks Human Rights Day, a day to reflect on the importance of equality, dignity, and justice for everyone.
Every little action leads to a bigger change. What will you do today?
December 10th marks Human Rights Day, an opportunity to celebrate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. Human rights come from their foundation document - the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. You can also read this in English and Gaelic. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” is a call to action, reminding everyone that the fight for equality, dignity, and freedom affects every aspect of our lives today and for generations to come.
As students, human rights aren’t just abstract principles—they’re personal. Whether it’s your right to access quality education, your freedom to express your beliefs or protection of your mental health and well-being, human rights touch every part of your university experience.
Human Rights and the Student Experience
1. Right to Education
The right to education is enshrined in the UDHR, yet barriers still exist for many students. Issues like rising tuition fees, lack of financial support, and inaccessible resources can make pursuing higher education challenging.
2. Freedom of Expression
Your time at university is a chance to explore and share your views, whether through student societies, protests, or creative projects. However, this freedom comes with responsibility—ensuring that expression doesn’t infringe on the rights or safety of others.
3. Equality and Non-Discrimination
Everyone deserves to feel welcome and valued, regardless of background, gender, or beliefs. Discrimination and harassment violate your fundamental rights and should never be tolerated.
4. Mental Health and Well-Being
The right to an adequate standard of living extends to mental health. Universities have a duty to support students facing mental health challenges, but accessing help isn’t always straightforward. Know that your rights include being treated with respect and accessing support.
How Can You Get Involved?
Human Rights Day is a perfect time to reflect on what we can do to promote and protect rights. Here are a few ways to get started:
- Learn your rights. Please familiarise yourself with the UDHR and how it applies to students.
- Speak up. If you witness injustice, report it or support those affected.
- Take action. Join student campaigns for equality, environmental justice, or mental health awareness.
