The Natural World of Argyll & Arran

We are hosting an exciting photography competition, open to all students of SAMS and UHI Argyll. Open until 31st October!

We are looking for student-taken photographs which showcase the beauty of the natural world of Argyll & Bute, and the Isle of Arran. These can be photos you have snapped on your phone, a film camera (although we will need a digital copy for judging), or on a digital camera. Show us animals! Show us plants! Show us landscapes! Show us any combination of the three!

Winners will be selected by Merlin Farrell (SAMS student and HISA officer), Timothy Tang (UHI Argyll student and HISA officer), Cameron Stewart (former SAMS student and professional photographer) and Kath Polley (UHI Argyll staff member and professional photographer).

Some terms and conditions:

No generative AI is to be used. Use of GenAI will lead to disqualification.
Panel of four judges: Merlin Farrell (SAMS student and HISA Depute President for SAMS), Timothy Tang (UHI Argyll student and HISA Depute President for Argyll), Cameron Stewart (former SAMS student and professional photographer) and Kath Polley (UHI Argyll staff member and professional photographer). If any judges pull out, then they will be replaced by HISA staff members.
Competition will run between 1^st and 31^st October
Entries will be on the natural world of Argyll, so can include flora, fauna, or landscapes (or any combo of these), and must be taken within Argyll & Bute or on the Isle of Arran.
Judging will be in early November
Any shortlisting of photographs ahead of formal judging will be done by the student HISA officers (Merlin and Timothy) and the HISA Coordinator for Argyll & SAMS (Annie)
By submitting a photograph to the competition you are permitting the submitted photograph, and your name, to be used by HISA for promotional activities
The winning photograph will be used as a Teams backdrop for the remainder of the academic year, other than when a HISA-wide campaign is ongoing (for example Pride, Black History Month, etc)
Multiple entries are permitted
Entries must be sent from your student email address

For students on UHI's Humanities Degree Scheme, we're responding to student feedback that, on top of your online studies, you're keen to meet fellow students in-person at campuses near you - both from your degree/class and in other subjects - and to access services from UHI and HISA.

Based on preferences, we're piloting these "Humanities Hubs" at UHI Perth in the first semester of 2026-27. So if you're a Humanities Degree Scheme student who is near the UHI Perth campus, please come along to any or all of these "hubs" on the following days:

• Tuesday 22nd September 11.30-1.30 (Room 019).

• Wednesday 7th October 12.00-2.00 (Room 116).

• Friday 23rd October 12.00-2.00 (Room 019).

• Friday 6th November 12.00-2.00 (Room 019).

• Thursday 19th November 12.00-2.00 (Room 019).

• Thursday 3rd December 12.00-2.00 (Room 019).

• Friday 18th December 12.00-2.00 (Room 019).

All "hubs" are in Room 019 on the ground floor of the UHI Perth Brahan building, or in one case on Room 116 on the first floor.

You can use these gatherings to chat to your fellow students, find a study buddy, explore the library together, or just stick your headphones on and join a class!

HISA will also be there to help you find your way, show you round campus, and tell you more about what we do to support and involve you - from shaping your learning through your feedback and Student Voice Reps (SVRs), to academic societies where you can collaborate with fellow students to dig into your subject interest in your own way.

Keep us posted with your thoughts about the hubs or about anything else you're thinking about student life at UHI, by contacting your Student Voice Rep or dropping us a line on socials or email.

And don't forget, whether you are near our UHI Perth campus or not, you can visit any other UHI campus at any time to use college facilities or visit the HISA office. And for all Humanities Degree Scheme students, you can join our Digital Students' Network!

A welcome event for our 2026-27 HISA Moray Student Voice Representatives! No need to register or let us know you're coming, just pop in for the whole hour or whenever you're free. This is a chance to meet some of your fellow SVRs, get to know the HISA team a bit better, and ask any questions you've got for us. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided, and we'll play a couple of icebreaker games!

You can attend this event if you've completed the SVR registration form, or even if you're just interested in the role but haven't completed the form yet. We can even help you sign up during the event, if you'd like!

Write for HISA!

We are always on the lookout for awesome articles to showcase here on the PGR HISA webpage!

This ongoing opportunity is open to any and all UHI postgraduate research students. We will happily receive and publish online any articles on anything to do with your experience as a PGR at UHI.

Topics might include (but are not limited to) things like:

An overview of your research and some wonderfully fascinating and niche thing you have discovered, but written for your fellow students from various disciplines (so not full of technical jargon)
Sharing amusing stories from your fieldwork and the loss of your favourite trowel in a spoil heap somewhere
A write-up about attending or presenting at a conference (and how bad the coffee was)
Some insider tips and tricks for newly enrolled PhD or MRes students
(Almost) anything else

Feel free to also send us any photos to go with your article (ideally at least one, even if simply you - the author - sitting and writing it)!

Come along to the LInkwood Technology Centre to meet Betty and Baxter, two therapy dogs from Canine Concern Scotland! Even better: enjoy some free pizza while you're there! This event is open to all UHI students, you don't need to be based at the Linkwood centre. No need to sign up, just come along to Linkwood and you'll find us very close to the main reception area. We'll be there from 12 - 2pm, but the pizza is first-come-first-served!

Lost Shore University Supertaster - Wednesday 23rd September

Join Lost Shore Supertaster on Wednesday 23rd of September. For £35, have a go at Europe's biggest wavepool and enjoy the event with other uni students. We will have an event-like buzz, with music, activities and great vibes!

Available surf lessons/ sessions:

Lessons are 90 minutes, including a 30-minute shoreline induction and a full coached water in the water. Sessions are 60 minutes.

· Beginner Lesson at 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:30.

· Improver Lesson at 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:30.

· Cruiser Session at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00

· Turns Session at 11:00 and 17:00

· Manoeuvres Session at 13:00

· Manoeuvres + Session at 15:00

Equipment

· Wetsuit and softboard included with beginner and improver lessons and cruiser session.

· If you are surfing Turns, Manoeuvres and Manoeuvres + you can hire a wetsuit for £4.

· All lessons and sessions include a softboard.

· You can also hire a surfboard in our surf shop or bring yours if you are doing a session.

Booking and checking in

1. Create your Lost Shore account with your university email.

2. During fresher’s week, visit the university surf club stall and scan the booking QR.

3. Select your surf and purchase the session.

4. On the day, pack a swimming costume and a towel.

5. Arrive at Lost Shore 45 minutes before your surf.

6. Check-in in reception.

7. Get changed and enjoy your surf.

Surf & unlock perks

· Attend the event and get added to our University Surf Club tier, which will give you access £35 surfs on Wednesday afternoons during the 2026-2027 academic year - only applicable for people booking with their university email.

· Access, on the day, to the new Uni Surf Club bundles, designed to help progress your surfing from £28 per surf and redeemable from Monday to Thursday.

As part of the session, they will introduce the UHI Scribblers!

You will hear about the society, and their history.

There will be a chance to join in a short writing prompt exercise, giving a taste of what they do in some of their meetings, andthere will be an opportunity for anyone to share what they have written.
